DNA Technologies Receives U.S. Patent on Authentication System
(Halifax, NS and New York, NY) DNA Technologies, a CrossOff company (TSX:OFF), announced today that they have received official approval for United States Patent 6,354,501 B1on their proprietary composite mark and read system. This is the first time that DNA's proprietary authentication technology has been combined with traditional, global barcode systems.
The system, which bundles barcode technology with the DNA MATRIX™, utilizes visible barcode patterns with invisible code arranged in the spaces of the barcode portion. The invisible pattern can only be detected using specially calibrated reader. And, since the lines of the barcode do not overlap, only a single-step printing and reading process is required. This allows for the technology to be used in conjunction with traditional tracking barcode systems utilized on most manufactured goods.
"Almost every manufactured item uses a readable barcode to be tracked through the supply chain," says Thomas A. Nicolette, President, DNA Technologies. "With this unique single-step printing process, manufacturers can protect the authenticity of their products in conjunction with their current barcode system. We are eager to partner with manufacturers to utilize our technology that can easily authenticate their products and reduce counterfeiting."
Industries that have been particularly hard hit by counterfeiting such as the computer, automobile and apparel industries currently use traditional barcode technologies to track their products through the supply chain. This technology will allow them to also authenticate the product and therefore, reduce the sale of knock-off merchandise. According the US Federal Trade Commission, the US automobile manufacturers and suppliers alone lose $12 billion a year in revenue because of the sale of counterfeit parts.
