DNA Technologies (Australia) was chosen as the product identification and authentication system over 100 other company's systems. The program DNA Technologies developed focused on goods that could easily be copied, specifically apparel.
All official Olympic goods were tagged with the patented DNA Matrix™ during the manufacturing process, so that each item could be positively identified in the marketplace by enforcement officials. More than thirty-four million labels and tags were used to protect everything from socks, to pins to jackets.
More than 3,422 inspections were conducted to determine whether counterfeit goods had entered the marketplace. The Sydney Olympic Committee reported 507 trademark violations (14.8%). And 77% of those violations occurred in the first three months.
"Revenues lost to counterfeiting were under 1% total."
