Creators & Makers Brand Protection
Keep the story connected to the object.
A handmade object can carry years of skill, a maker’s reputation and a story that matters to its next owner. But as artwork, custom instruments, knives and limited-edition pieces change hands, the records that explain their origins can become separated from the physical piece.
DNA Technologies helps creators add a physical layer of authentication to compatible works, creating another way to connect the object to the information that supports its identity.
Made by you.
Recognizable beyond the first sale.
Your signature, maker’s mark, build record or certificate may already tell an important part of the story. A physical authentication mark can complement those measures by giving someone a way to check the object itself.
Depending on the material and the purpose, a DNA-based mark may be discreet or visible. Its placement and application are considered with you before anything is marked. The goal is to respect the piece, its finish and the way you want it presented.
Where it can help
-
Connect a finished work to an artist’s records, a gallery’s documentation or an estate’s registration process.
-
Add a physical point of reference alongside a maker’s mark, build record or certificate as a piece enters the collector market.
-
Help distinguish authorized pieces and support confidence when they are exhibited, resold or passed between owners.
-
Explore a marking service that can complement your existing documentation and expertise across the creators you work with.
Example Scenario
A maker finishes a one-of-a-kind guitar and documents its materials, serial number and original owner. With the maker’s permission, a discreet DNA-based mark is applied to a tested, compatible area and linked to the build record.
Years later, the guitar appears for sale without its original paperwork. A prospective buyer can have the physical mark checked and matched to the maker’s record. That check doesn’t replace an expert’s assessment of the instrument, but it helps reconnect the piece to its documented history—even when the paperwork has gone missing.
More Than 30 Years of Physical Authentication
Since 1993, DNA Technologies has helped organizations connect valuable products and objects to their identity through physical authentication. Our work has spanned fine art, sports memorabilia, licensed merchandise, luxury goods and consumer products.
Today, we’re exploring how that experience can serve individual artists and makers, too. A custom instrument, an original artwork and a limited-edition object each call for a different approach. We start with the piece itself—its materials, finish and documentation—then work out whether and how a physical mark can add value.
