Limited Editions Are Moving Faster. So Are the Counterfeits.

In June, U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted just 111 counterfeit designer products that would have carried a combined retail value of more than $19.2 million if genuine. The shipment included imitation Rolex, Richard Mille and Cartier watches, along with luxury eyewear and apparel. That same month, Hong Kong authorities seized approximately 230,000 suspected counterfeit products worth an estimated $20 million ahead of the FIFA World Cup. The haul included roughly 30,000 high-quality imitation jerseys, with nearly 80% of the goods reportedly destined for the Americas. (U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Associated Press)

The products and markets were different, but the underlying strategy was the same: counterfeiters were targeting concentrated demand, premium pricing and a narrow window in which buyers were motivated to act quickly.

For companies producing high-value, collectible or limited-edition goods, that window presents a growing brand risk. Counterfeiters no longer need to wait for a product to become an established classic. A successful launch, collaboration, championship, celebrity endorsement or viral moment can create an imitation market almost immediately.

Scarcity Has Become a Counterfeit Opportunity

Limited editions are valuable because supply is intentionally constrained. That scarcity attracts committed customers, creates cultural relevance and can support strong secondary-market values. It also creates favourable conditions for counterfeiters.

Demand often exceeds the number of legitimate products available. Buyers may be unfamiliar with the precise characteristics of a newly released item. Official product images can circulate before the release, while unauthorized listings appear across marketplaces, social platforms and private messaging channels. Resale prices can climb quickly enough that an unusually high price no longer signals authenticity—and an unusually low one does not always discourage a hopeful buyer.

The current collectibles market illustrates the scale of the problem. In May, Professional Sports Authenticator reported that it had intercepted more than $200 million in counterfeit and altered collectibles during 2025. Fraudulent submissions increased by 45.3% over the previous year, while counterfeit Pokémon cards increased by 125%. (Sports Illustrated)

These figures represent products that reached a professional authentication process. They do not account for counterfeit items that were never submitted, were sold privately or remained undetected in personal collections.

The broader distribution system makes enforcement even more difficult. The OECD and European Union Intellectual Property Office estimate that counterfeit goods represented approximately $467 billion in global trade based on the latest comprehensive data. Their research also found that shipments containing fewer than ten items accounted for 79% of customs seizures in 2020 and 2021, up from 61% only a few years earlier. (OECD–EUIPO)

Counterfeit trade is becoming more distributed. Instead of moving exclusively through large shipments, products can travel individually through the same postal, courier and e-commerce systems used by legitimate sellers.

A Genuine Product Can Still Carry a False Identity

The authentication challenge is also becoming more complex than determining whether a product was made by the brand named on it.

A genuine product can be altered to resemble a rarer version. Authentic components can be combined with unauthorized components. Packaging, serial numbers, labels and certificates can be copied, replaced or separated from the product they were intended to protect.

Entrupy’s 2026 State of the Fake report describes a genuine Chanel handbag that had been modified with aftermarket crystals to imitate an exceptionally rare runway version. The underlying bag was authentic, but the identity and value being claimed for it were not. (Entrupy, State of the Fake 2026)

This distinction matters for limited-edition brands. Authentication should not prove only that an object originated with a particular company. It may also need to establish its edition, production date, materials, configuration, creator, licensed partner or place within a numbered release.

A serial number can support that record, but a visible number is also information that can be copied. A certificate can document provenance, but its value weakens if there is no reliable way to connect it to the physical object. Effective authentication needs to bind the identity claim to the product itself.

What a Defensible Authentication Strategy Must Answer

The right technology depends on the product, how it is manufactured and the risks it is likely to encounter. Before selecting a label, code, platform or marker, brand leaders should be able to answer several practical questions:

  • What is being authenticated: the product, its packaging, a critical component or all three?

  • At what stage of production will its identity be established?

  • Can the authentication feature be removed, transferred or reproduced?

  • Who needs to verify it, and under what circumstances?

  • Will the evidence remain available after the original packaging and receipt are gone?

  • Can the system distinguish a standard product from a rare edition or authorized collaboration?

  • What evidence will be available if authenticity is challenged years later?

  • How will ownership changes, resale, repair or restoration be handled?

These questions move authentication beyond a promotional feature. They make it part of product governance, quality control and long-term reputation management.

Physical and Digital Proof Serve Different Purposes

Digital certificates of authenticity can give customers accessible product information, support ownership records and create an ongoing connection between the brand and the buyer. They can also strengthen the resale experience by making provenance easier to understand.

However, a digital record is most valuable when it is securely anchored to the physical product it describes. Otherwise, the certificate itself can become part of the counterfeit.

A covert physical marker serves a different purpose. It allows the product to carry evidence of its identity without advertising the location or precise nature of the security feature. When that marker is incorporated into an ink, coating, resin, polymer, label or product component during manufacturing, it becomes substantially more difficult to separate the proof from the object.

The strongest strategies use these layers together. The digital layer makes relevant information accessible. The physical layer provides evidence connected to the product. Controlled verification and forensic laboratory analysis provide escalation when a transaction, investigation or legal dispute demands a higher standard of proof.

Authentication Must Begin Before the Product Becomes Valuable

Many brands consider authentication only after counterfeits have been discovered. For limited editions, that can be too late.

Once products have entered circulation, applying a consistent identity system becomes more expensive and operationally difficult. Existing pieces may be dispersed among customers, dealers and collectors. Production records may be incomplete. The original packaging may have disappeared. In some cases, the people who can verify how an item was made are no longer available.

Authentication is more effective when it is designed alongside the product and its manufacturing process. The brand can determine where a marker should be placed, what information should be recorded, who controls access and how future verification will work. It also allows security to be introduced without compromising the product’s design, craftsmanship, function or customer experience.
